A Scientific Visit by the Medical Microbiology Department Students to the Sarwaran Health Center-Erbil
A visit to the Sarwaran Health Center involving fourth-year Medical Microbiology Department students was held on Thursday, February 22, 2024. The visit program for each group included an introduction to various specialized clinics within the center, such as the children’s clinic, internal diseases clinic, surgical diseases clinic, dental clinics, and others, providing a comprehensive overview of the center’s departments. During the visit, students had the opportunity to closely observe and supervise activities at the vaccine clinic under the guidance of a specialist overseeing the clinic.
The specialist shared valuable insights with the students regarding the equipment and tools utilized in the vaccine center. Moreover, they gained an understanding of the regional national vaccine program and witnessed the dedication of medical professionals at the vaccine clinic. This clinic played a vital role in administering vaccines on a daily basis, free of charge, to registered children under the careful supervision of a pediatrician and specialized nurses.
The students actively engaged in learning about the vaccine administration process, from the initial registration of the child to ensuring their previous vaccine history and determining the appropriate vaccine for the current visit. Additionally, they were educated about the proper storage conditions for vaccines within the
vaccine center and clinic.
Under the guidance of the trip supervisor, the students were introduced to the equipment within the vaccine room and were instructed on its correct usage. They were enlightened about the various methods of administering vaccines to children, such as oral routes for vaccines like polio and intramuscular injections for vaccines like measles and rubella. The visit also provided an opportunity for the students to familiarize themselves with the national vaccine program in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.
As part of the nosocomial infections course, the students were briefed by supervisors on the different risks faced by hospital workers, particularly biological risks. The supervisors outlined precautionary measures and procedures essential for minimizing these risks. Emphasizing the infection control program, the students gained an understanding of its pivotal role in preventing and halting the transmission of infections, with specific precautions tailored to the nature of the microorganisms involved.
