Cihan University and UNDP Celebrate World Press Freedom Day

Department of Media at Cihan university celebrates this Thursday World Press Freedom Day in cooperation with United Nations Development Program (UNDP), said the celebration coordinator Mrs. Abeer Mahmoud.
Mrs. Mahmoud explained that the celebration will focus on the importance of Mass Media in development; as well as, journalists safety, sustainability and integrity of journalism, and prevalence of law.
She added that the program of the function will include speeches that will be delivered by President of Cihan University Prof. Dr. Amjad Saber Al-Dalawi and UNDP director Dr. Adam Abdul-Mawla, in addition to a joint letter to be submitted to the UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki Moon and UNESCO general director Ms. Ereena Bokova.
Mrs. Mahmoud also said that a documentary on Kurdish press will be shown during the gathering. The documentary, which is produced by Media department at the University, is directed by Asso Qadir Sheikh- a student at Media department. On the side lines of the celebration, an exhibition of old Kurdish newspapers will be opened. “Furthermore, a number of journalists working in Kurdistan Region of Iraq will be rewarded in recognition for their efforts to protect freedom of Press” she said.
She concluded her statement by inviting all colleagues working in various audio-visual, written and electronic media and all activists in the field of press freedom to attend the gathering, which is scheduled for Thursday May 8th at 10:00 am in Cihan University in Nawrouz Quarter, Erbil.
