The Erasmus + Programme at Cihan University- Erbil
What is Erasmus+ ?
Erasmus+ is the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport. It runs for seven years, from 2014 to 2020, with organizations invited to apply for funding each year to undertake creative and worthwhile activities.
The Origins of the Name
The Erasmus Programme is an acronym meaning (EuRopean Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students). It is a European Union (EU) student exchange programme established in 1987. Erasmus+, or Erasmus Plus, is the new programme combining all the EU’s current schemes for education, training, youth and sport. The main goal of Erasmus plus is Capacity Building of Higher Education Institutions all over the world.
The programme is named after the Dutch philosopher, theologian, Renaissance Humanist, monk, and devout Roman Catholic, Desideius Erasmus of Rotterdam, called the crowning glory of the Christian humanists.
Erasmus+ (2014-2020) aims to modernize education, training, youth work and capacity building in higher education institutions all over the world. It is open to education, training, youth and sport organizations across all sectors of lifelong learning, including school education, further and higher education, adult education and the youth sector.
Erasmus+ provides grants for a wide range of actions including the opportunity for students to undertake work placements abroad and for teachers and educational staff to attend training courses.
Erasmus+ mainly consist of two key actions:
- Erasmus+ Key Action1 (ICM) International Credit Mobility provides a unique opportunity for teachers, headmasters, trainers and other staff of education institutions to participate in international training courses in different European countries. The partner countries institutions can apply to receive the grant to send their staff members abroad for training.
- Erasmus+ Key Action 2 Capacity building in Higher education institutions. This action is mainly concerned with developing, improving and upgrading higher education institutions teaching and research programmes such as curriculum development, internationalization of universities, application of Bologna system, renewable energy systems utilizations, e-learning modern methodologies in education, ..etc.
Erasmus+ At Cihan University-Erbil
Cihan university-Erbil is the only Private University in Kurdistan and in Iraq who fully registered at the European Commission Portal external & EU Participant Identification Code (PIC) number = 907654415, which allows applying for EU scholarships and academic projects and receiving grants with Program and partner countries universities and higher education organizations.
At the moment, Cihan University- Erbil is a partnership in Erasmus plus KA107 with Ondokuz Mayis University at Samsun-Turkey and Mardin Universities/Turkey. This programmes will come into action during the year 2019 and accordingly Cihan University will be able to send two undergraduate/ postgraduate students to Ondokuz Mayis /Mardin Universities for one semester course (5 months each). This student mobility project will be fully financially funded by Erasmus plus of the European Union. Furthermore, CU currently has a good negotiation with some European Universities to establish the same programme with them.
Cihan University- Erbil also submitted a proposal to other Turkish Universities for partnership agreement on another Erasmus plus KA107 program. We look forward for the approval.
