The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Cihan University was established in 2017 as the only department in all Iraqi universities that award a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. The program offers students a solid knowledge base in clinical dietetics, human nutrition, food science, and public health throughout the four-year program. The students will be taught to a high level the importance of the link between food, nutrition, and human health. As food is an essential part of the therapeutic process of any disease, nutrition and dietetics is an application of food science, therapeutic nutrition, and diet programs to prevent and treat diet-related diseases to enhance the health of the individual and society.
The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary for progressing toward foundational for a variety of professional careers in nutrition, dietetics, and food services. The course has been designed following different universities in developed and developing countries, ensuring you are taught to a national and internationally recognized standard.

Job Description

Through four years of study in the Department of Nutrition, students learn the basic sciences related to nutrition such as life sciences, anatomy, physiology, immunology, food microbiology, general chemistry, biochemistry, nutritional chemistry, human behavior, communication and computer skills and human nutrition. Then students learn basic and advanced principles in nutrition specialization and all that It has to do with the health of the individual and the community in addition to training students to clinical and therapeutic nutrition and professional skills in various areas of nutrition sciences through the stages of human life. Students will also learn about food science in terms of manufacturing, Food safety and quality, and scientific research skills and graduation projects in the final stage. Upon successful completion of the Bachelor degree in Nutrition and Dietetics .Science, graduates will be eligible to work by providing healthy nutrition advice and guidance in hospitals, medical centers and complexes, as well as working in food labs, restaurants, hotels, food quality and safety control centers as follows:

  1. Nutritional specialist in medical centers/ hospitals, serve the patients by giving therapeutic diet depending on healthy nutrition guidance to those suffering from (non communicable disease like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases
  2. Specialist or assistant nutritionist and fitness consultant- trainer/ Sport nutritionist.
  3. Work in media and community education to guide and healthy promotion and food awareness about the safety and quality of food and healthy nutrition.
  4. Work as technician in nutrition and food analysis laboratories.
  5. Work as a researcher in the field of nutrition and food science in universities and scientific research institutes after obtaining postgraduate studies.
  6. Work as developer of food recipes and products and auditor or supervisor, in food factories and pharmaceutical companies .restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools and food companies to evaluate food and ensure its safety, quality & authenticity
  7. Work as specialist in food quality control to assess the safety, quality and authenticity of local and imported food, especially at entering points.
  8. Work in the field of food marketing and trading in major food retailers or sales agent for nutrition and food services.
  9. Work in governmental and NGO institutions related to nutrition and food services.
  10. Work in the international organizations such as FAO and UNICEF to educate and promote breastfeeding and healthy nutrition.


The mission of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Cihan University- Erbil is to prepare graduates to be future leaders in nutrition, dietetics, and food services to improve human health and prevent non-communicable disease through better nutrition care and a healthy lifestyle. The department strives to accomplish this goal through research to understand how diet influences health at molecular and population levels, the development of nutritional strategies, informing policy, the education of researchers and practitioners, and the distribution of nutrition information to health professionals and the public.


The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics' vision is to increase the nutritional and food awareness for the community in the Kurdistan Region and the rest of Iraq through better nutritional care for the public. It is also aimed to be recognized at national and international levels for nutrition science, education, leadership, and research.


  1. Preparing a generation of qualified graduates with high levels of nutritional skills and upgrading the therapeutic diet role in Kurdistan and the rest of Iraq.
  2. Educating the community about healthy food, nutritional care, especial diet, malnutrition diseases and epidemiology through holding local and international conferences, workshops, seminars, and training programs.
  3. Developing the department regionally and globally by conducting outstanding scientific researches.
  4. Emphasize cooperation and partnership with local and regional institutions/ organizations to promote nutritional care and protect public health.
  5. Initiating different activities to improve nutrition knowledge and education throughout the four years of study.
