ORAL PRESENTATIONS BY GROUPS OF FIRST-STAGE BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES STUDENTS OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
On 13 April 2022, six groups of first-stage students from the Biomedical Sciences Department of Cihan University – Erbil delivered their oral presentations as part of their Academic English course taught by their instructor, Ms. Zeena in the current semester. This assessment-based activity which was conducted at the university library in four sessions (morning till afternoon) under the supervision of Ms. Zeena aimed at improving the students’ presentation skills involving the medical topics assigned to them and providing them the opportunity to practise speaking English as well as thinking critically outside the classroom.
The Biomedical Sciences Department was honoured with the presence of the Vice-President for Scientific Affairs, Assist. Prof. Dr. Maysoon Al-Haidari and Head of the aforementioned department, Dr. Ali M. Hussein, Heads of Departments and teaching staff consisting of assistant lecturers, lecturers, and professors from two different colleges, namely the College of Science and the College of Health Technology who assessed the students’ oral presentations. The invited guests were particularly from the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Department of Medical Microbiology, Department of Physiotherapy, Department Of Nutrition and Dietetics, Department of Community Health, and Department of Medical Biochemical Analysis.
On this day, all students looked smart in their formal attire. They were eager to perform, although they felt it was a challenging assessment having to deliver their presentation in front of the invited guests. The students were able to speak confidently and all guests provided positive feedback and complimented the students on their oral presentations. According to them, it was an impressive performance from such young students who are only in the first year of their studies and are able to present hard and challenging medical topics given to them. This activity was certainly a great experience for these students!
