The Media Department Commemorates the 124th Anniversary of the Kurdish Press Day
On the occasion of the 124th anniversary of the emergence of the first Kurdish newspaper in the name of (Kurdistan) in 1898, the Department of media at Cihan University – Erbil organized on Tuesday 19/4/2022 in the conference hall a special festival for this occasion, which included several academic and student activities.
In the presence of Prof. Dr. Amjad Saber Al-Dalawi, President of Cihan University – Erbil, and the President of the Journalists Syndicate, Mr. Hakim Azad Hama Amin, and a number of guests, writers and journalists, and in the presence of Dr. Maysoon Al-Haydari, Vice President of the University for Scientific Affairs, and several teachers and students, the festival ceremony opened with a minute of silence in appreciation of the souls of martyrs from the Peshmerga and journalists in the Kurdistan Region.
In the beginning, the lecturer, Amanj Ali Othman, head of the media department, gave a speech in which he welcomed the distinguished guests and congratulated all journalists, media workers and students of the media department on the anniversary of the emergence of the first Kurdish newspaper. In his speech, he briefly referred to the history of the Kurdish press and the beginnings of its inception in Cairo by Medhat Badr Khan.
As part of the festival’s activities, a photo report was presented by the Assistant Lecturer, Hemin Amin Shwani, about the first Kurdish newspaper’s emergence.
This was followed by the speech of the President of the Journalists, Mr. Hakim Azad, who in turn spoke about the reality of media work today in the Kurdistan Region and the role of the Syndicate in enacting regulations that regulate media work in the Kurdistan Region to build a distinguished media future in all media institutions.
During the festival, a video report on the establishment of the media department at Cihan University – Erbil was presented, prepared by the student Karwan Masoud in the second stage.
As part of the festival’s ceremony, Dr. Rayya Omar Amin, an academic writer and researcher in the field of the Kurdish language, gave a lecture in which he spoke about the emergence of the Kurdish press, its history and the beginnings of its appearance up to this day.
Professor Dr. Hirsch Rasoul Murad, an academic and journalist writer, presented a seminar on the importance of media in modern societies and its role, and the obstacles that stand in front of it. He referred to the development taking place in the laws regulating media work in the Kurdistan Region. Human customs and ethics and their role in regulating media work to perform its function in the fullest manner.
On the other side of the festival, a series of documentaries prepared by students of the Media Department of the fourth stage were shown. The topics of documentaries varied including: the victories of the Peshmerga forces in its battles against ISIS, as well as the issue of the displaced people in Iraq, including the displacement and kidnapping of Yazidis, as well as films documentaries about the history of epidemics in the world, as well as about the mosques in the city of Erbil, as well as violence against women, and other topics that were selected and prepared by the students.
At the end of the festival, and for the purpose of supporting and encouraging students to work in the media field, certificates of appreciation were distributed to a number of students currently working in a number of media institutions and radio and television stations inside and outside the region.
The festival concluded with a group photo of all the guests, teachers and students.
