A Scientific Visit to the Nwebunawa Oil Factory by a Group of Third-Year Nutrition and Dietetics Department Students
On Monday, February 3, 2025, under the supervision of Assistant Prof. Yasin Mamand, third-year students from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Cihan University-Erbil conducted a scientific visit to the Nwebunawa Oil Factory. The visit aimed to provide students with practical insights into oil production, quality control, and the nutritional aspects of edible oils, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world industry practices.
Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by Mr. Mohammed Rostam, the factory manager, who expressed his pleasure in hosting future nutritionists and food industry professionals. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and the food industry to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of food processing, safety regulations, and quality assurance.
The visit began with an introductory session, where Mr. Rostam and his team provided an overview of the factory’s operations, production line, and the different stages of oil extraction and refining. They explained the raw material selection process, methods of oil extraction, purification techniques, and packaging standards, ensuring that the final product meets both nutritional and industrial safety standards. As part of the tour, the students observed the entire production cycle, from pressing and refining oils to bottling and quality control checks. Experts at the factory elaborated on the nutritional properties of different types of oils, highlighting their fatty acid composition, stability, and health benefits. Special attention was given to the impact of refining on oil quality, the importance of antioxidants in preventing rancidity, and the differences between refined and cold-pressed oils.
During the interactive session, students engaged with the factory staff, asking questions about oil processing techniques, industry challenges, and the role of food technologists in ensuring product safety. They also discussed market trends, consumer preferences, and the latest innovations in the edible oil industry, gaining a deeper understanding of the practical applications of their academic studies.
After the visit, Mr. Mohammed Rostam expressed his appreciation for the students’ keen interest and encouraged them to pursue further research in the fields of food science and nutrition. He also extended an invitation for future collaborations between the Nwebunawa Oil Factory and Cihan University-Erbil, reinforcing the importance of hands-on learning experiences in shaping well-rounded professionals. This visit reflects Cihan University-Erbil’s dedication to providing its students with industry exposure and practical knowledge. By engaging with professionals and observing real-world food production processes, the students gained valuable insights into food quality control, safety measures, and the industrial aspects of nutrition and dietetics, further preparing them for successful careers in the field.
