Biomedical Sciences Department Students Introduced to Water Purification and Supply Systems at Erbil’s Ifraz Water Project

On Sunday, October 26, 2025, the Head of the Biomedical Sciences Department at Cihan University – Erbil organized a scientific visit for third-year students to the Erbil Water Directorate.

During the visit, supervised by Assistant Lecturer Zahrakhan Maroof Tahir, the students toured the Ifraz Water Treatment Plant. Upon arrival, they were warmly received by Engineer Salih Osman Mustafa, supervisor of the Ifraz 2 project, and Engineer Mohammed Tariq Mawlood, one of the project engineers. As part of the tour, the engineers provided students with a comprehensive explanation of the water supply system and the various stages of the water purification process. They also described the procedures used to ensure the quality and safety of the water before it reaches consumers.

Engineer Mohammed explained the steps taken to test and treat water, including chemical testing to verify its suitability for human use. He demonstrated how specific chemical reagents are added: if the water turns lighter in color, it indicates contamination, whereas a darker color signifies that the water is safe. He further elaborated on measuring pH and sodium levels using specialized equipment before the final disinfection step with chlorine.

At the end of the visit, Assistant Lecturer Zahrakhan Maroof Tahir expressed her gratitude to Engineer Salih and Engineer Mohammed for their warm welcome and informative presentation. She also appreciated the efforts of the plant’s staff for their cooperation and contribution to the students’ learning experience.
