Biomedical Sciences Students Conduct a Scientific Visit to Maryamana Hospital Laboratory
First-stage students from the Department of Biomedical Sciences conducted a scientific field visit to the Laboratory Department of Maryamana Hospital on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Mohammed Hussein Mohammed. The visit aimed to familiarize students with the hospital environment and to provide practical exposure to clinical laboratory operations.
The students were warmly received by Dr. Liza Ilyas, who guided them on an educational tour of the laboratory’s various sections. During the visit, Dr. Liza provided a comprehensive explanation of the patient reception process and the sample collection unit. She emphasized the critical importance of proper sample collection techniques and accurate labeling to ensure reliable laboratory results.
The tour continued to the Hematology and Blood Bank Unit, where Dr. Liza introduced the students to the Sysmex hematology analyzer and explained the principles and workflow of Complete Blood Count (CBC) testing. The students then visited the Biochemistry Unit, where they were introduced to the Cobas c311 and Cobas c303 automated analyzers. The differences in testing capacity and applications were clarified: the Cobas c311 is used for routine biochemistry, electrolyte, and HbA1c testing, while the Cobas c303 offers higher throughput and supports a wider range of chemistry assays.
Additionally, the students visited the Microbiology Unit, where Dr. Liza explained bacterial culturing and isolation techniques, highlighting the use of the VITEK 2 system for automated bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The visit concluded with a demonstration of the laboratory information system, which is used for data entry and the preparation of final laboratory reports.
At the end of the visit, Assistant Lecturer Mohammed Hussein Mohammed expressed his sincere appreciation to Dr. Liza Ilyas and the laboratory staff for their cooperation, guidance, and valuable contribution to the students’ practical learning experience.
