Cihan University-Erbil Actively Participates in the General International Conference of UNESCO Chairs in Iraq for Developing Scientific Research and International Partnership
In line with its continuous efforts to contribute to the development of scientific research and strengthen academic partnerships at both national and international levels, Cihan University-Erbil actively participated in the General International Conference of UNESCO Chairs in Iraq.
The conference, hosted by the University of Baghdad and organized by the Federal Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in cooperation with the UNESCO Office in Iraq, took place from October 1 to 2, 2025. It witnessed broad participation from academics, researchers, and diplomats from various Iraqi, Arab, and international universities. Professor Dr. Sabih Hashim Mahood, Head of the Architecture Engineering Department, represented Dr. Amjad Saber Al-Dalawy, President of Cihan University-Erbil, at this high-level event, following an invitation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research – Department of Missions and Cultural Relations.
During the two-day conference, Professor Dr. Haider Abd Zahed, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, explained in his speech that this project connects leading Iraqi universities in scientific research with their global counterparts, reflecting the excellent scientific research and cultural exchange relations between Iraq and international scientific institutions through UNESCO. In this context, several key topics related to the values of pluralism and human rights were discussed, including issues of genocide, interfaith dialogue, peace, and health education, all contributing to building a more conscious and humane society. Participants emphasized the importance of enhancing the role of UNESCO Chairs in Iraq as effective platforms for developing scientific research and supporting cultural and scientific dialogue, and stressed the necessity of continuing international cooperation to serve sustainable development issues and consolidate social peace.
During his participation in panels, meetings, and discussions, the representative of Cihan University-Erbil, affirmed the university’s deep commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), clarifying that these goals have become a central theme in all scientific departments for the academic year 2024-2025. He also presented Cihan University-Erbil’s plan and strategy for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, high-quality education, reducing inequalities, and how to link scientific research to contemporary issues, including the UN goals, and enhancing Iraq’s position in international academic forums. The university’s representative stated: “We are proud to be part of this initiative, which aims to strengthen scientific research capabilities and cultural exchange between local and international researchers, and to make a significant contribution to building a culture of peace, preventing genocide, and promoting interfaith dialogue.”
In conclusion, the conference ended by emphasizing the importance of strengthening the role of UNESCO Chairs in Iraq, and reiterating the necessity of continuing international cooperation to serve sustainable development issues and consolidate social peace. Cihan University-Erbil eagerly anticipates utilizing the outcomes of this conference to advance its academic and research programs and expand its network of international partnerships, thereby serving its future visions.
