Cihan University Hosts Workshop on Zirconia Layering Techniques in Dental Technology
Monday, February 9, 2026 Cihan University–Erbil organized a specialized scientific workshop entitled “Layering on Zirconia Substrates: Optical and Structural Approaches” at the VIP Hall. The event was held as part of the academic activities of the Dental Technology Department within the College of Health Technology, aiming to enhance professional knowledge and practical skills in modern prosthodontic materials.
The workshop featured two distinguished speakers. Assistant Lecturer Mahmood Abdullah Ahmed, BSc, MSc in Dental Technology (Prosthodontics), Head of the Dental Technology Department at Cihan University, delivered a keynote lecture focusing on the crystalline structure of zirconia and its essential material characteristics in dental materials science and prosthodontic applications.
He was followed by Kawan Saleh Othman, BSc in Dental Technology (Germany), an international trainer at Gulzar Company and Laboratory Director at the German Center for Dental Technology, who presented a practical lecture on ceramic layering approaches and their optical and structural impact on restorative outcomes.
The program concluded with a live practical demonstration of ceramic build-up techniques, highlighting optimization strategies related to macro- and micro-spatial cut-back designs of zirconia substrates. Participants were encouraged to engage actively, ask questions, and benefit from hands-on learning.
Zirconia continues to serve as a major alternative to metal alloys in prosthodontics due to its superior mechanical strength, although aesthetic limitations remain a challenge. Recent developments in multilayer zirconia and internal staining have improved initial aesthetics but may influence optical consistency and mechanical behavior. Experts emphasized that layering feldspathic glass ceramics over zirconia substrates provides a balanced solution that preserves structural integrity while achieving high aesthetic standards.
The workshop aimed to deepen understanding of zirconia’s crystalline structure, demonstrate modern ceramic layering techniques, and provide practical training in build-up procedures, supporting the advancement of dental technology education at Cihan University.
