Community Health Nursing Students Conduct a First Aid Awareness Visit to Mardin High School
On Sunday, February 1, 2026, as part of the community service field projects organized by the Department of Community Health Nursing at Cihan University–Erbil, a group of fourth-year students conducted a scientific educational visit to Mardin High School in the Khabat District. The visit aimed to raise students’ awareness of fundamental first aid principles.
The student team was warmly received by the school principal, Mr. Hoshyar Mohiuddin, prior to the commencement of the session, which was delivered by Wissam Khabat, Salih Ahmed, and Avin Niro. During the seminar, the presenters emphasized the critical importance of the “Golden Hour” in emergency situations. They highlighted that first aid knowledge is not merely a technical skill, but a vital humanitarian and ethical responsibility that can significantly reduce mortality and permanent disability rates within the community.
The practical component of the activity included scientific demonstrations using laboratory equipment to illustrate life-saving procedures in critical situations. The students explained the appropriate response to sudden cardiac arrest by demonstrating modern chest compression and artificial respiration techniques designed to maintain cerebral blood flow until professional medical assistance arrives. In addition, they demonstrated the Heimlich maneuver for clearing airway obstructions caused by foreign objects, particularly in children and adolescents.
The session also addressed common misconceptions regarding burn treatment, such as the inappropriate use of toothpaste or butter. Instead, the students advocated evidence-based practices, including cooling the burn with lukewarm water, maintaining a sterile environment, and controlling severe bleeding through direct pressure.
The final segment of the training focused on the management of various types of bites and stings. Students strongly advised against cutting or sucking the affected area and emphasized the importance of immobilizing the injured limb and ensuring the prompt transfer of the patient to a medical facility.
At the end of the event, Mr. Hoshyar Mohiuddin, Principal of Mardin High School, expressed his sincere appreciation to the students of Cihan University–Erbil for their valuable contribution. He praised the accuracy and clarity of the scientific information presented, noting its direct impact on public safety and life-saving efforts, and expressed his hope for continued academic and professional cooperation between the two institutions.
