Community Health Nursing Students Conduct a Scientific Visit to Swedish Hospital
On Monday, February 2, 2026, Third-level students from the Department of Community Health Nursing at Cihan University–Erbil conducted a scientific and educational field visit to the Swedish Hospital. The visit aimed to enhance students’ practical competencies by exposing them to a professional clinical environment that follows international healthcare standards.
The visit was carried out under the academic supervision of Dr. Thamari Thankam and Dr. Sardar Hussein Rasool. It began with an introductory session presented by Mr. Mohammed Mutalib Ibrahim, Medical Director and Head of the Emergency Department at Swedish Hospital. During the session, he introduced students to professional workplace practices and explained the international criteria and standards applied in the recruitment of nursing staff in advanced healthcare institutions.
In the beginning, students toured the ground floor, which includes the reception area, Outpatient Departments (OPD), laboratory, pharmacy, radiology unit, ultrasonography (USG), and the Emergency Department, which is equipped with four beds. In the Emergency Department, Mr. Mohammed explained the procedures used to assess unconscious patients using the AVPU scale. He also discussed emergency management of cardiac cases through the ABCDE approach and introduced the triage system used to categorize patients based on clinical priority.
Then, the students visited the Radiology Department, where they were introduced to Digital Radiography and its clinical applications. They also toured the CT room, where the purpose and functioning of the CT scanner were explained, noting that a single CT scan is equivalent to approximately 400 conventional X-ray images. In addition, students received an overview of the MRI machine and the Panorama CT machine used for dental imaging. The concept of magnetic field strength and its measurement in tesla was also explained.
Following this, students visited the third floor, which accommodates medical, surgical, and pediatric cases with a total capacity of 13 beds. Nursing staff explained the types of cases admitted to these units and outlined their routine nursing duties and patient care responsibilities.
The visit concluded with an overview of the second floor, which houses the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and Operation Theatre (OT). Although there were no active cases at the time of the visit, students were introduced to the structure, equipment, and functions of these critical care units.
