On Monday, September 21, 2026, fifth-stage students from the Department of Architectural Engineering at Cihan University–Erbil conducted a scientific field visit to Tajeel District, located within the buffer zone of the Erbil Citadel.
The visit was supervised by Professor Dr. Rashed Hamed Yaseen. During the visit, the students conducted a comprehensive survey of the study area, focusing on land-use analysis, building materials, heritage value, and physical condition assessment. The students were divided into four groups according to these topics, allowing each group to focus on a specific aspect of the district. The students observed the existing buildings, urban fabric, street conditions, land uses, construction materials, and the relationship between the built environment and the surrounding historical context.
The fieldwork enabled the students to identify the existing architectural and urban characteristics of Tajeel District and to understand the challenges associated with areas located within the buffer zone of a significant historical site. The collected information will be used to document the current condition of the area and to evaluate the heritage significance and development potential of its buildings and urban spaces.
The observations and data collected will support the students’ subsequent analysis and the development of appropriate urban renewal strategies, including conservation, rehabilitation, and redevelopment interventions, according to the heritage significance, physical condition, and development potential of each site.
