Department of English Conducts Training Session on Motivation and Marketing in Students’ English Language Proficiency

On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, fourth-stage students from the Department of English at Cihan University–Erbil participated in a training session entitled “Motivation and Marketing in Students’ English Language Proficiency,” delivered by Dr. Chalang Abdulsalam under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Marwa Mahmood Ameen.

At the beginning of the session, Dr. Chalang highlighted the role of motivation in learning English and encouraged students to improve their speaking skills through regular practice, self-confidence, and active participation in English-language activities.

Subsequently, he discussed the importance of English language proficiency in the job market, particularly for students approaching graduation. He explained how effective communication skills can help graduates succeed in job interviews, enhance their employment opportunities, and communicate effectively in professional environments. He also encouraged students to participate in relevant activities and training sessions before graduation and to continue developing their language skills afterwards to support their academic and career goals.

The practical segment of the training featured the bamboo tree activity, which emphasized patience, perseverance, self-motivation, and consistent effort in achieving personal, academic, and professional goals. The students were asked to identify three personal strengths, two English language skills they wanted to improve, and one career goal they hoped to achieve within the next five years. Similar to the bamboo tree, which requires patience and continuous care to grow, students reflected on the importance of consistent practice and determination in developing their English proficiency and preparing for their future careers. Following this reflection, several students delivered one-minute self-introductions in English, presenting their strengths, language skills, and career aspirations as if they were introducing themselves to a potential employer. This activity encouraged students to overcome their fear of speaking English, build self-confidence, and learn how to present their abilities effectively in the job market

In conclusion, Assistant Lecturer Marwa Mahmood Ameen expressed her gratitude to Dr. Chalang Abdulsalam for delivering the training session and sharing his knowledge and expertise with the students.
