Department of Law at Cihan University-Erbil Conducted a Scientific and Awareness-Raising Activity
On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Ahmed Mustafa and Sonia Hiwa, first-year students from Department of Law, conducted a scientific and awareness-raising activity for the students of New Kurdistan Future Preparatory School. The session focused on “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Law and Its Impact on Human Rights.”
The students were warmly received by Mr. Rikan Sherwan, Assistant Principal, along with several faculty members.
Ahmed Mustafa began by explaining the concept and origins of artificial intelligence (AI). He then discussed the global transformations brought about by the integration of AI into various sectors. He highlighted the growing role of AI in the legal field, particularly its applications in the judicial system and its potential to influence legal workflows. He also addressed how AI could impact fundamental human rights, including the right to a fair trial.
In the second part of the lecture, Sonia Hiwa focused on the effects of AI technologies on the right to security. She discussed both the positive and negative implications of these technologies. Sonia provided examples of how states and companies use tools such as surveillance cameras, radar systems, and social analysis applications, explaining how these methods can influence individual security rights.
This session was part of a series of activities conducted by first-year law students as part of their human rights course. Both students emphasized the importance of such initiatives in developing students’ skills and fostering community engagement. They also highlighted the role of these events in raising awareness—especially among school students—about human rights issues.
The school administration and students expressed their gratitude and appreciation to the organizers, recognizing the importance of addressing contemporary topics like artificial intelligence and human rights to increase public awareness.
