Department of Media Holds Seminar on Media Literacy

The Department of Media at Cihan University-Erbil, on Thursday, October 23, 2025, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer (Dlan Ismael Mawlood), a scientific seminar on “Media Literacy” was held at Cihan Academy Hall for Training and Development.

The seminar was presented by a journalist (Hadi Salimi) and was attended by students from various stages of the Department of Media. At the beginning of the seminar, Mr. Hadi Salimi discussed the main objectives of media and provided a detailed definition of media literacy, explaining how this skill has become a fundamental competency for every individual in the present era. He also highlighted the core principles and foundations of media work in general and how to learn media work in a professional and standard manner.

In another part of the seminar, he spoke about the different types of news sources and clarified the importance of truthfulness and impartiality in journalistic work, while pointing out the danger of bias in writing and presenting news and the negative impact of this phenomenon on media credibility. He also shed light on the different agendas of various media institutions in drafting and presenting news and information, explaining how each media institution has its own agenda and specific objectives that directly affect the style of selecting, drafting, and presenting news and information, which emphasizes the importance of media awareness among viewers and readers. Students also actively participated in the seminar through dialogue and questions.

At the end of the seminar, Assistant Lecturer Dlan Ismael Mawlood, on behalf of the Department of Media, presented a certificate of appreciation and gratitude to Mr. Hadi Salimi in recognition of his presence at Cihan University-Erbil for the purpose of raising the level of awareness and scientific knowledge of the students.
