Department of Optometry and Vision Techniques Students Receive Hands-On Training at Sweedy Hospital
On Sunday, September 27, 2026, second-year students from the Department of Optometry and Vision Techniques at Cihan University-Erbil participated in hands-on training on optical and vision examination devices at Sweedy Hospital, under the supervision of Dr. Anas Al-Rawi. The training was part of the department’s commitment to linking theoretical knowledge with practical application from the early stages of study.
Upon their arrival at the hospital, the students were received by technician Mohammed Dilawer, who provided them with an introductory overview of the eye examination unit and its workflow. The students became familiar with a number of devices used in visual examinations and gained practical skills in using each one. Using the automated refraction device, they trained to identify refractive errors and accurately interpret the results. With the vision chart projector, they learned how to measure and assess visual acuity. They also used the slit lamp to practice examining the anterior parts of the eye and observing their condition.
The students also received training in essential examination techniques. They practiced determining visual measurements using a trial frame and trial lenses and learned how to assess eye refraction using a handheld scope. In addition, they learned the proper technique for covering one eye during an examination to ensure accurate results. The students carried out these examinations under the direct supervision of the doctor and the supervising technician, who provided feedback and corrected their performance step by step.
Mohammed Firas, one of the second-year students, expressed his appreciation for the experience, stating that the hospital-based training provided them with a valuable opportunity to work with devices they had previously studied only in theory during lectures. He explained that observing how the devices operate and participating in the examinations themselves made the concepts clearer and helped reinforce their understanding. He added that such visits increase their confidence in their practical skills and motivate them to explore the field of optics and vision more deeply. He also expressed his appreciation to Cihan University-Erbil, the management of Sweedy Hospital, and the supervising staff for their fruitful cooperation.
