English Department Students Organize Deaf Awareness Activity at Cihan Institute

On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, third-stage students from the Department of English at Cihan University–Erbil visited the Department of Business Administration at Cihan Institute under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Marwa Mahmood to organize an awareness activity as part of Deaf Awareness Month, observed in September. They were warmly received by Mr. Mohammed Hassan Agha, Head of the Department of Business Administration.

As part of the activity, the students attended a class taught by Mr. Hassan Abdulla, where they conducted a seminar activity focusing on Deaf awareness and the importance of promoting understanding, inclusion, and equal opportunities for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

During the activity, Wafaa Sherzad Ahmed delivered a presentation on sign language awareness, highlighting the importance of sign language as an essential means of communication and its role in promoting interaction and inclusion.

Next, Saba Ayad Abdulwahab spoke about equal opportunities for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people, emphasizing the importance of ensuring their participation in education, employment, and social life without barriers or discrimination.

This was followed by a presentation by Dlbren Lazgen Omer, who shared life experiences of people close to him who are part of the Deaf community, focusing on Deaf culture, identity, communication, and the importance of understanding their experiences.

The students then involved the institute students in a role-play activity designed to help them experience and better understand the communication challenges faced by Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. They also distributed informational brochures highlighting sign language, communication, accessibility, and inclusion.
