Media Department Student Conducts Awareness Seminar on Impact of Social Media Pressure
To raise awareness among youth and highlight the psychological risks associated with social media, a seminar was organized on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Baharka Girls’ School. The seminar was conducted by Mohammed Jito, a fourth-stage student from the Department of Media at Cihan University–Erbil, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Delan Ismail Mawlood.
The student was warmly received by Ms. Shilan Muhyiddin, Principal of Baharka Girls’ School. The seminar was held under the theme ‘The Impact of Social Media on Increasing Psychological Pressure.’
In the first part of the seminar, Mohammed Jito explained that the improper use of social media platforms can lead to a phenomenon known as social comparison, in which young people compare their real lives with the idealized and edited images presented online. This behavior often results in reduced self-confidence and increased levels of anxiety.
In another part of the seminar, he discussed how youth, when engaging with information without sufficient awareness, may become influenced by messages designed to shape their behavior or thinking. He emphasized that young people should not be passive recipients of content but should instead approach social media critically and avoid allowing negative messages to disturb their psychological well-being.
At the end of the seminar, the Ms. Shilan Muhyiddin, the principal of Baharka Girls’ School expressed her appreciation to Mohammed Jito for delivering an informative and engaging presentation and expressed her hope for the continuation of such awareness-raising activities to further educate and support students.
