Media Department Student Raises Awareness of Social Media Risks at Local School
On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Mardin Mohammed, a third-stage student from the Media Department at Cihan University–Erbil, presented a seminar titled The Negative Role of Social Media Groups at Harman Basic School for Girls in Erbil, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Dlan Ismael Mawlood.
Upon arrival, the student was received by the school principal, Ms. Shilan Muhyiddin, who commended his initiative in raising the students’ awareness on the topic.
During the session, Mardin Mohammed discussed five primary negative impacts of social media groups on students. He explained that comparing oneself to peers—especially regarding shared results and achievements—can foster feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. In the second part of the seminar, he addressed the issue of information overload and disorganized content, emphasizing that the constant flow of diverse news and excessive questioning can disrupt a student’s focus and mental tranquility.
Furthermore, Mardin Mohammed highlighted the effects of informal pressure and negative discourse, noting that harsh language, unpleasant jokes, or intimidating messages can significantly affect psychological well-being. In the final segment, he discussed the development of the “fear of failure,” asserting that witnessing the constant successes and achievements of others on social media can heighten anxiety and self-doubt.
In conclusion, Ms. Shilan Muhyiddin expressed her gratitude to Mardin Mohammed for delivering this important seminar, emphasizing the value of organizing such activities for the benefit of the students.
