Medical Biochemical Analysis Department Students Conduct Scientific and Community Outreach Activity at Family Mall, Erbil
On Saturday, 30 January 2025, a group of top-performing third-year students from the Department of Medical Biochemical Analysis at Cihan University–Erbil organized a combined scientific and community outreach activity at Family Mall in Erbil. The activity was carried out under the supervision of the Head of the Department, with the direct support, escort, and guidance of Lab Assistant Ms. Manar Firas.
The event was conducted to promote public health awareness while enabling students to apply their laboratory and communication skills in a real-world community setting. During the activity, the students set up a dedicated booth to offer several basic health screening services, including blood pressure measurement, blood grouping, and Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation. Each test was accompanied by clear explanations of the results, normal reference ranges, and practical health advice tailored to each participant.
In addition to the medical tests, the students demonstrated, most notably, a chemical reaction known as “Elephant Toothpaste,” which was used to attract attention and to explain basic chemical principles safely and engagingly. Special attention was given to children, for whom the students organized face-painting activities and prepared a photo booth, allowing them to take pictures while wearing lab coats and helping to create a fun and educational atmosphere.
Furthermore, the students delivered awareness presentations on several important medical topics, including Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections, explaining their sources, modes of transmission, symptoms, and prevention methods. Furthermore, they discussed common glandular and metabolic disorders such as hypothyroidism, hypertension, and anemia, emphasizing early detection, lifestyle modification, and the importance of regular medical check-ups.
Notably, one of the individuals who voluntarily participated in the health screenings was Professor Wisam Al-Shaikhli, President of Victoria University, London, who expressed interest in the students’ work and praised their professionalism and scientific competence.
The activity was highly interactive and well received by the public, reflecting the students’ strong academic background, effective communication skills, and commitment to community service. This outreach event successfully demonstrated the vital role of medical laboratory sciences in public health education and community engagement.
