Nutrition and Dietetics Department Student Delivers Seminar on Diabetes Mellitus at NTI Institute
On Wednesday, December 3, 2025, Naz Ahmed, a student from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Cihan University–Erbil, delivered a scientific seminar titled ‘Diabetes Mellitus’ at the NTI Institute under the supervision of the Head of the Department. This event was held as part of the department’s field training and community outreach initiatives. She was cordially received by Mr. Aryan Kamaran, Director of the Institute, who expressed his appreciation for the continued collaboration between NTI Institute and Cihan University–Erbil.
The seminar began with a comprehensive overview of diabetes mellitus, including its definition and main classifications, with particular emphasis on the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Naz explained the metabolic disturbances associated with hyperglycemia and described the roles of insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion. She also identified major risk factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary habits, and genetic susceptibility.
Subsequently, she addressed the chronic complications of diabetes affecting the eyes, peripheral nerves, kidneys, blood vessels, and heart, emphasizing the importance of early detection and effective glycemic control in preventing or delaying these complications. A dedicated segment of the presentation focused on medical nutrition therapy for individuals with diabetes, in which she presented the principles of balanced meal planning, carbohydrate management, consideration of the glycemic index, and the roles of weight management and physical activity in enhancing insulin sensitivity.
Additionally, Naz emphasized the critical role of dietitians in patient education, the development of individualized meal plans, and the facilitation of sustained behavioral change. The seminar concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which attendees inquired about practical difficulties in adhering to a diabetic diet and strategies for encouraging healthier lifestyle choices.
