
Practical training for students of the second and third stage on food safety test and inspections
The second-year students of Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Cihan University – Erbil – in a group work with third year students to learn more about food microbiology and food safety on 10/12/2020.They implemented a practical application to examine the safety of the fresh salads that were provided in some restaurants and cafeterias in Erbil.
10 random samples were collected by students and examined the biological contaminants and microorganisms of the samples to test the total count of aerobic bacteria, fungi and the total count of the coliform bacteria group (E. Coli). It was unfortunately found that some samples were highly contaminated with them. So, it indicates the negligence in the processes of preparing and cleaning these fresh foods which are not cooked.
This practical application for students aims at acquiring the skill to work in public health laboratories and food safety and quality control, as well as to raise awareness of everyone who deals with food in the production chain. The training was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Qais Nogaim.
