Scientific Field Visit to Selected Erbil Districts for Urban Analysis
On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, fifth-year students from the Department of Architectural Engineering at Cihan University–Erbil conducted a scientific field visit to the Tayrawa, Saydawa, Eskan, and Runaki districts in Erbil, under the supervision of Lecturer Asmaa Ahmed Mustafa.
During the field visit, students conducted a comprehensive urban and spatial analysis of the selected districts and their surrounding urban context. The visit focused on understanding the existing urban structure, spatial organization, land-use patterns, street networks, circulation systems, pedestrian movement, public and semi-public spaces, and the relationship between built-up areas and open spaces.
The field observations gave students practical insight into how different urban elements interact to shape a district’s character, identity, functionality, and spatial experience. Discussions also addressed the challenges and opportunities within the selected urban areas and how existing conditions can inform future urban design strategies.
The scientific field visit enabled students to apply urban analysis and urban design principles in a real-world context, strengthening their ability to observe, document, interpret, and evaluate urban environments. The information and observations collected during the visit will support students in developing their Urban Design Studio projects, particularly in preparing site analyses, identifying urban issues and potentials, and developing context-responsive urban design proposals.
