Students from the Medical Laboratory Analysis Department Visit Shar Hospital Laboratory in Erbil
On Tuesday, 18 November 2025, third-year students from the Medical Laboratory Analysis Department at the College of Applied Sciences, Cihan University–Erbil, conducted an educational field visit to the laboratory of Shar Hospital. The visit focused on strengthening the students’ practical skills and enhancing their understanding of diagnostic laboratory workflows in a real clinical environment. It was conducted under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Sally Khalil Baqer and Lecturer Nizar Yousif.
The students were received by the laboratory supervisor, Omar Rashid Ghaib, who introduced them to the process of receiving samples, verifying their quality, and registering them within the laboratory system. He also explained the quality standards followed by the hospital laboratory to ensure the accuracy and reliability of diagnostic results. During the tour, the students visited the Clinical Chemistry Department, where they learned about automated analyzers and essential biochemical markers such as liver enzymes, renal function tests, glucose levels, and electrolytes. They also observed internal and external quality control procedures applied in the laboratory. The visit continued to the Hematology Department, where the students reviewed the full blood count (CBC) process, identification of blood components, and microscopic examination of blood smears. They later explored the Microbiology Department, where they were introduced to culture techniques, microbial isolation, and antibiotic sensitivity testing. The visit also included a tour of the Immunology and Hormones Department, where diagnostic methods for autoimmune diseases and hormonal disorders were explained, using advanced immunoassay and fluorescence-based techniques.
At the end of the visit, the students expressed their appreciation for the valuable practical experience, noting that it effectively bridged theoretical knowledge with real laboratory practice and contributed to preparing them for their future professional careers.
