The Department of General Education Organized a Cinema Event to Enhance Students’ Language Skills
As part of an innovative educational initiative, the Department of General Education/ELT organized a cinema event on Wednesday, February 19th, 2025, at Empire Cinema in Erbil. The event targeted second- and third-year students enrolled in Conversation and Grammar in Context courses , under the supervision of Assistant Lecturers Rozhan Ali and Shirin Shiralizadeh.
The primary objective of the event was to strengthen students’ listening and speaking skills in real-life contexts while demonstrating the practical application of grammatical rules in conversation. To achieve this, the supervisors selected the film *William Tell*, offering students an immersive and engaging cinematic experience. During the screening, students encountered unfamiliar vocabulary, took notes, and explored word meanings, thereby enriching their linguistic knowledge.
Following the film, students engaged in lively discussions, analyzing characters, scene composition, and cinematic techniques, while also evaluating the actors’ performances. This interactive dialogue enabled them to articulate their thoughts, describe the elements with precision, and effectively integrate newly acquired vocabulary into real-world communication.
Moreover, the event provided students with exposure to authentic spoken English in a natural setting, significantly improving their listening skills and fostering confident communication. To reinforce their grammatical understanding, students analyzed the linguistic structures used in the film, solidifying key concepts learned in their classes.
This activity proved to be a highly effective and engaging educational experience, seamlessly blending theoretical learning with practical application. It served as a dynamic platform for enhancing listening comprehension, expanding vocabulary, and cultivating analytical and discussion skills in English.
