The Translation Department at Cihan University-Erbil Organizes International Translation Day Workshop
The Translation Department at Cihan University-Erbil organized a student workshop on October 1st, 2024, to celebrate International Translation Day. The event aimed to raise awareness about the significance of translation in fostering cross-cultural communication and to provide students with insights into the professional field. The workshop began with an inaugural speech by Lecturer Raad Sabir Rauf, Head of the Translation Department. In his address, Mr. Raad emphasized the growing importance of translation in today’s globalized world and the critical role of translators in bridging linguistic and cultural gaps.
As part of the workshop, students from the Translation Department participated in a series of interactive group activities. These activities allowed them to apply their translation skills in practical scenarios, encouraging teamwork and problem-solving. The students showcased their ability to translate various text types while discussing cultural nuances. Mr. Howkar Hamafaraj Hassan from the Kurdish Language Center also delivered an important speech about the center’s role in advancing Kurdish language studies.
The workshop concluded with a Q&A session, where lecturers and students engaged with the speakers, deepening their understanding of the professional translation landscape. One of the guest speakers, Mr. Tanya Ahmed Shihab from Rudaw TV, shared his experiences as a professional translator in the media industry. He provided valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of broadcast translation, particularly in the fast-paced environment of news media.
