Translation Department Students Explore Professional Practices at Zoom Translation Office
To familiarize students with the professional translation environment and enable them to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in class to a real working setting, the Translation Department at Cihan University–Erbil organized a scientific visit for a group of fourth-stage students to Zoom Translation Office in Erbil on February 4, 2025, under the supervision of the Head of the Department, Pola Tahseen Mohammad. The participating students were Kamal Edres Hameed, Avesta Abbas Abubakir, Noor Pshtiwan Asaad, Armani Abooud, Amanj Abdulrazaq Abdullah, Danya Fathi Fadhil, and Sara Babir Kamala.
Upon arrival, they were warmly received by Mr. Barzan Mohammed Syan, a notary at the office, who introduced himself and his role at the office. To further familiarize them with the office, the students were given a guided tour of its various divisions, during which they were introduced to the office manager, Mr. Peshmerga Qadr Qadr, and the staff members working in each section. Mr. Peshmerga Qadr Qadr provided detailed explanations of his roles and responsibilities, as well as the office’s history of establishment and organizational structure, including the functions and types of services offered by each division.
During the visit, the essential requirements for professional translation practice were explained to the students. They were shown the official identification that certified translators must possess to perform translation tasks, as well as various types of official documents accepted by the office for translation purposes.
Following the introductory session, the visit continued with hands-on activities conducted by the students at the office. These activities involved analyzing different translated documents available at the office. The students were then asked to share their observations and identify translation-related features, after which they practiced translating selected documents themselves. The constructive feedback they received on their work enhanced their understanding of translation.
The visit concluded with words of appreciation extended to Mr. Barzan, Mr. Peshmerga Qadr Qadr, and all office staff, followed by a group photo to commemorate the occasion.
