U.S. Consulate Trains Cihan University-Erbil Students in Journalism and Artificial Intelligence to Support Sustainable Development Goals
The U.S. Consulate in Erbil organized a training course titled “Journalism and Artificial Intelligence” for Media students at Cihan University-Erbil. The course introduced students to the latest technological applications in journalism, focusing on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance media work and support Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 on quality education and Goal 9 on innovation and infrastructure.
Held at the Classy Hotel in Ankawa from January 16 to 18, 2025, the course was attended by fourth-stage students Banawsha Pishraw and Barzan Taher.
Led by experts in media and technology from the United States, the program combined theoretical sessions with practical workshops. Key topics included:
- Using AI to verify news.
- Analyzing big data in media.
- Creating media content with AI tools.
Students showed great enthusiasm for the content and highlighted its benefits. One participant noted: “This course opened our eyes to modern tools and techniques that can transform the way we work as journalists in the future.”
Assistant Professor Azwar Mehdi Qasim Agha, Head of the Department of Media, commended the training, stressing the importance of equipping students with skills to keep pace with rapid advancements in digital media. He remarked: “This course is a significant step in developing our students’ capabilities and preparing them for the evolving job market, especially with the remarkable progress in modern technologies and AI applications in media.” He also thanked the U.S. Consulate for this valuable initiative.
This training is part of the U.S. Consulate’s efforts to support Iraqi youth by enhancing their skills in media and technology. It aims to prepare a generation capable of keeping up with global developments in media and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals in Iraq.
