Biomedical Sciences Students Visit Erbil Ifraz 2 Water Treatment Plant
As part of their practical training, second-stage students from the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Cihan University–Erbil visited the Erbil Ifraz 2 Water Treatment Plant on Sunday, October 26, 2025. The visit was conducted under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Mohammed M. Hussein to enhance students’ understanding of microbial isolation methods used in water analysis before public distribution.
Upon arrival, the students were warmly received by Engineer Zakaria Abdulkhaliq Yonus, the supervisor of the water treatment laboratory. He provided a detailed explanation of the microbial testing procedures carried out to ensure the safety and quality of drinking water. Engineer Zakaria particularly demonstrated the E. coli detection test using the membrane filtration method, which involves passing water through a special filter membrane and incubating it for 24 hours. The appearance of blue or green bacterial colonies indicates the presence of E. coli, signifying unsafe water. He also explained the use of the dissolved oxygen meter (DO meter) to measure oxygen concentration in water, an essential parameter for assessing microbial activity and overall water quality.
At the end of the visit, Assistant Lecturer Mohammed M. Hussein and the students expressed their sincere appreciation and gratitude to Engineer Zakaria Abdulkhaliq Yonus and the staff of the Ifraz 2 Water Treatment Plant for their warm hospitality, valuable explanations, and support in enriching the students’ practical knowledge.
