Cihan University-Erbil Department of Media Students Gain Insightful Experience at Yaksany Radio
On Sunday, December 22, 2024, first-year Media Department students, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Ms. Dlan Ismail Mawlod, participated in an educational visit to Yaksany Radio Station, an institution dedicated to combating violence against women and families. Organized by the university, the visit aimed to provide students with practical experience and insights into media operations within Kurdistan Regional Government institutions.
The visit began with an introduction to Yaksany’s radio studios, where students explored various programs focused on awareness campaigns and educational initiatives. Moreover, they also observed the station’s hotline 119, a crucial service offering support to victims of domestic violence.
Radio Equality staff demonstrated the process of handling calls and shared valuable statistics on the common issues reported through the hotline. “It was inspiring to see how Yaksany Radio uses media to make a real difference in the community,” shared one of the students. “Learning about the 119 hotline and the family counseling services was especially impactful.”
In addition to that, the students also toured the Directorate for Combating Violence Against Women and Families, where they learned about the collaborative efforts involving psychologists, religious teachers, and university professors to address family-related issues.
“We believe in providing our students with practical experiences that complement their classroom learning,” said Assistant Lecturer Dlan Ismail Mawlod, who supervised the trip. This visit to Yaksany Radio gave them valuable insights into the role of media in addressing critical social issues.
However, Yaksany Radio expressed openness to continued collaboration with the Media Department at Cihan University-Erbil, inviting students to benefit from the station’s expertise and opportunities to develop their media skills. This visit highlights the importance of partnerships between academic and government institutions in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 5 on gender equality and Goal 17 on partnerships for the Goals objectives that Cihan University-Erbil actively strives to fulfill.
At the end of the visit, Assistant Lecturer Ms. Dlan Ismail Mawlod expressed her gratitude to Yaksany Radio for offering detailed insights into the directorate’s vital work and dedication to addressing social challenges.
