Cihan University-Erbil Launches a Training Course on Communication Skills in Healthcare
In line with its commitment to enhancing professional competencies across various sectors, Cihan University-Erbil has launched a specialized training course focused on developing communication skills in the healthcare field.
Under the supervision and presence of Prof. Dr. Amjad Saber Al-Delawi, President of Cihan University-Erbil, the training course aims to equip teachers, physicians, staff, and employees with essential communication techniques to improve healthcare interactions. This initiative reflects the university’s ongoing dedication to professional development and capacity building.
Cihan University-Erbil launched a specialized training course on Sunday, February 23, 2025, focusing on communication skills in the healthcare sector. The event, which took place in the university’s VIP Hall, was attended by distinguished guests and experts in the field. The training session was held in the presence of Prof. Dr. Amjad Saber Al-Delawi, President of Cihan University-Erbil, Dr. Dlovan Mohammad Fateh Jalal, General Director of Erbil Health Sector, Prof. Dr. Ayad Hazem Kakayi, Vice President for Scientific Affairs, along with deans, department heads, and faculty members.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Amjad emphasized the university’s dedication to serving the community beyond academic education. He stated, “A university’s role is not limited to granting degrees; it is also responsible for providing essential services to society. As we navigate an era of rapid technological and artificial intelligence advancements, it is crucial to adapt and evolve to meet the ever-changing demands of our community.”
Prof. Dr. Amjad highlighted the significance of communication skills in professional fields, particularly in healthcare. According to him, ‘‘We take great pride in the fact that Cihan University-Erbil is the only university in Iraq to integrate ‘Communication Skills’ as a core subject across all three scientific departments. Effective communication is crucial regardless of an individual’s level of expertise or knowledge. Without strong communication skills, even the most knowledgeable professionals may struggle to provide proper assistance to those they serve. For instance, a doctor’s role in the healthcare sector extends beyond diagnosis and treatment; it involves understanding the patients’ experience, recognizing their pain points, and effectively communicating with them to ensure the right course of action. By developing strong communication skills, healthcare professionals can better assess patients’ conditions, leading to more accurate diagnoses and improved treatment outcomes.”
Concluding his speech, Prof. Dr. Amjad reaffirmed the university’s commitment to expanding such training programs across the Kurdistan Region. This was depicted through his statements; “Cihan University-Erbil stands ready to offer this course to healthcare centers and offices in cities and towns throughout the region, ensuring that healthcare professionals everywhere have access to essential communication training. Effective communication in the medical field is not just a skill; it is a necessity for improving patient care and professional interactions.”
He also extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Health and the Erbil Health Directorate for their continuous collaboration and support in making this initiative possible.
As part of the opening ceremony, Dr. Dlovan, delivered a speech in which he expressed his appreciation for Cihan University-Erbil and its ongoing collaboration in offering the Communication Skills course.
He emphasized the Ministry of Health’s requirement for medical professionals, particularly those seeking promotion to specialist doctors, to participate in and complete such training programs. “This course holds significant value, as effective communication is essential for professionals in every field. Strong communication skills particularly play a crucial role in doctor-patient interactions, leading to better understanding, diagnosis, and treatment. I extend my sincere gratitude to Cihan University-Erbil, especially Prof. Dr. Amjad Saber Al-Delawi, the President of the University, for his dedication to fostering this partnership. I hope this course will continue to be offered in the future, benefiting even more healthcare professionals.”
The five-day training course will be led by experts and lecturers from Cihan University-Erbil, focusing on enhancing communication skills and healthcare capabilities to ensure improved patient care.
Attendees will participate in daily interactive sessions, including role-playing exercises, discussions on verbal and non-verbal communication, and strategies for making patients the central focus of medical interactions. The training course aims to equip healthcare professionals with the essential skills to foster stronger doctor-patient relationships and enhance the overall quality of care.
