College of Dentistry Student Workshop: Infection Control, Patient Communication, and Sterilization Protocols
On Tuesday, February 17, 2026, a specialized workshop on infection control, patient communication, and sterilization protocols in clinical and laboratory settings was organized at the VIP Hall of Cihan University–Erbil, specifically by the College of Dentistry. The workshop was held to strengthen professional practices in dental healthcare.
Students from the second and third stages of the College of Dentistry delivered a comprehensive series of presentations addressing key aspects of infection control and patient safety in both clinical and laboratory environments. Their contributions reflected a strong understanding of preventive healthcare practices and highlighted the importance of maintaining safe treatment settings for both patients and healthcare professionals.
Khalida Ghazi Majeed, a second-stage student, presented an in-depth explanation of the chain of infection, outlining its six essential components and emphasizing practical strategies to interrupt transmission within dental settings. She also highlighted the significant role of mobile phones as potential reservoirs of microorganisms, stressing the necessity of routine disinfection and responsible use inside clinics.
The next student, Shad Zana Saleh (third stage), discussed the fundamental principles of infection control, focusing on standard precautions, hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE), and cross-contamination prevention. Complementing this topic, Shadan Fuad Ahmad (third stage) introduced the basic concepts of sterilization and infection control, explaining different sterilization methods, instrument processing steps, and the importance of monitoring sterilization effectiveness.
From the second stage, Ayan Azad Muhammad Amin addressed biohazard waste management, detailing correct segregation, handling, and disposal procedures in accordance with safety guidelines. She also reviewed sterilization protocols that reduce environmental and occupational risks.
Communication in patient care was another major theme of the workshop. Sura Saud Ghalib (third stage) focused on effective patient communication, demonstrating how clear explanations and reassurance can improve patient cooperation and build trust. Similarly, Rahel Nahro Hamad (second stage) discussed communicating infection control measures to patients, highlighting ethical responsibility and patient awareness in preventing disease transmission.
Finally, Ban Saud Ghalib (second stage) examined infection control practices in dental and basic laboratories, emphasizing surface disinfection, proper instrument handling, and laboratory safety standards that ensure protection for both technicians and patients.
Overall, the presentations provided a well-rounded educational experience that reinforced the critical role of infection control, sterilization, waste management, and professional communication in modern dental practice. The workshop also featured two distinguished speakers. Lecturer Dr. Reka Ramiz Ali delivered the clinical section, highlighting essential infection prevention measures and effective patient communication in dental practice. This was followed by Assistant Lecturer Sawen Tahseen Taha, who presented the laboratory section, focusing on sterilization standards and safe laboratory procedures.
Together, these presentations emphasized the importance of proper sterilization, safe laboratory procedures, waste management, and clear patient communication in maintaining high standards of healthcare safety.
The event was attended by the University Vice President, Assistant Professor Dr. Ayad Hazem, and the Dean of the College of Dentistry at Cihan University–Erbil, Assistant Professor Dr. Ninous Polus Philip, along with esteemed faculty members and dedicated students.
At the end of the workshop, participants posed questions and engaged in open discussion with the speakers, allowing for clarification of key concepts and a deeper understanding of infection control practices.
