DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING VISITED GOMASPAN DAM PROJECT
On 5 October 2022 (Wednesday), the Department of Civil Engineering organized a scientific visit for fourth-stage students to Gomaspan Dam project under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Sami. The purpose of the visit was to identify the concrete dam construction and implementation mechanism.
During the visit day, Mr. Abdullah Gardi, the director of the executing company of the dam project, and the company’s engineering team welcomed Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Sami and the students.
The students then met Mr. Ako Dhahir, an engineer and project manager who oversees the work of the Kurdistan Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources. He introduced the design details of the project by presenting slides and answering student questions. Mr. Ako Dhahir then took the students on a tour inside the dam, where the students were given a theoretical study of the dam’s location, foundation, flood or spillway location, and dam reservoir materials.
Next, the students visited the site’s labs and observed the daily laboratory tests performed at the dam site. Mr. Sirwan Kamal, a project consultant, explained to the students how to conduct laboratory tests on concrete.
At the end of the visit, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Sami thanked Mr. Abdullah Gardi, Mr. Ako Dhahir, and the staff at Gomaspan Dam for their assistance and guidance provided to the students. This visit is important for students to combine their research’s theoretical and practical aspects.
