Department of Nutrition and Dietetics Students Conduct a Health Assessment Visit at Haji Idris Center for Autism
On Thursday, February 12, 2026, students from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Cihan University-Erbil visited Haji Idris Center for Autism under the supervision of Assistant Professor Yasin Galali.
During the visit, the students carried out a set of practical nutrition and overall health assessments for the children at the center as part of community engagement activities. The assessment included measuring body weight and height to calculate BMI and reviewing general physical indicators related to nutritional status. In addition, the students observed common signs and symptoms that may suggest vitamin or nutrient deficiencies, such as changes in skin, hair, appetite, fatigue, or other visible indicators, aiming to build awareness of how nutrition can reflect on general health and daily functioning. Alongside the measurements, the students discussed daily dietary habits and routine meal patterns with the center’s staff and caregivers to better understand food preferences, common challenges, and factors that may affect eating behavior. Based on these observations, the students provided practical nutrition instructions focusing on balanced meals, appropriate snack choices, hydration, and reducing excessive intake of foods with high sugar and unhealthy fats. They also highlighted the importance of regular meal timing and choosing nutrient-dense foods that support growth and overall well-being.
The visit concluded with a constructive discussion and feedback session with the center’s staff, emphasizing the role of nutrition in supporting health and quality of life. The activity reflected the Department’s commitment to applying academic learning in real settings and strengthening community-based health awareness through supervised student practice.
