English Language Department Students Conduct Ramadan-Themed Conversational Activity with the Public in Erbil
On Sunday, February 22, 2026, a group of second-stage students from the English Language Department at Cihan University–Erbil conducted a practical, Ramadan-themed conversation activity with members of the public at various locations in Erbil, including restaurants and shops. The participating students were Marikh Saman Othman, Tawar Anwar Aziz, and Dlbren Lazgen Omer. The activity was organized in connection with the holy month of Ramadan under the guidance and supervision of Lecturer Pola Tahseen Mohammad, the Conversation course lecturer and Head of the Department.
The activity was designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply the conversational principles studied in class in authentic, real-world settings. During the activity, the students interacted with people of different ages, genders, professions, educational backgrounds, and ways of thinking. They asked questions related to Ramadan, using the language preferred by each person they met. The questions encompassed general topics concerning the meaning and importance of Ramadan, as well as personal experiences, daily routines, food and sleep habits, individual preferences, and religious practices. Throughout these interactions, students carefully observed the do’s and don’ts of effective conversation, followed appropriate conversational structures, and used relevant phrases learned during the course. The conversation was a two-way interaction, with the public responding to all questions cooperatively, which contributed to a positive and engaging conversational experience.
The students expressed great enjoyment in participating in the activity, noting that it allowed them to practice speaking with people they did not previously know. This experience not only enhanced their conversational competence but also boosted their confidence in communicating outside the classroom environment. The students ended each conversation politely by saying goodbye, wishing the participants a blessed Ramadan, and presenting Ramadan greeting cards.
