General Education/ELT Department Students Raise Awareness of the Effects of Social Media on Mental Health at Shokh School
On Tuesday, 24 February 2026, the Department of General Education/ELT at Cihan University–Erbil organized an educational seminar at Shokh School under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Rozhan Ali Khdir. Upon arrival, the university representative was warmly received by the school principal, Ms. Pari Sabr Hussein, who expressed her gratitude for the university’s initiative in addressing modern challenges faced by students today.
The seminar, titled ‘Effects of Social Media on Mental Health,’ was presented by Noora Emad, a dedicated fourth-stage student from the Department of General Education/ELT. She provided a comprehensive analysis of how excessive digital engagement impacts students’ mental health and academic performance. Noora explained that platforms like TikTok and Instagram can contribute to poor time management, increased procrastination, and a decline in grades and critical thinking skills. She highlighted the problem of ‘shallow learning,’ noting that constant notifications and divided attention make it difficult for students to achieve a deep understanding of their school subjects. The seminar also addressed the psychological pressures of online perfectionism, emphasizing that constant comparison with others can lead to anxiety, emotional stress, and low self-esteem. Additionally, Noora warned that late-night phone use disrupts sleep and results in fatigue during classroom hours.
The seminar concluded with an interactive discussion, during which students were encouraged to practice self-control and limit screen time to maintain a healthier balance between technology and education. Ms Pari Sabr Hussein praised the quality of the presentation and commended the professional delivery by the fourth-stage student.
