Media Department Students Highlight the Negative Impacts of Mobile Phones and Electronic Games During an Educational Visit to a Primary School
Students from the Media Department at Cihan University–Erbil presented a seminar titled “Mobile Phone Usage and Electronic Games” on Sunday, January 25, 2026. The seminar was delivered to the students of Leyla Zana Basic School for Girls in Erbil.
The seminar was held under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Dlan Ismail Mawlood, with the participation of fourth-stage Media Department students Abdullah Ahmed, Rebwar Mohammed, Dalia Wasfi, and Hiba Hisham. The students were warmly received by the school principal, Ms. Hozan Qays Nooreddin, and the assistant principal, Mr. Ahmed Mohammed.
At the beginning of the seminar, as a gesture of solidarity with the Kurds in Rojava, student Rebwar Mohammed Ali highlighted the latest developments in Western Kurdistan. He discussed the situation of Kurdish brothers and sisters in areas currently under attack by the Syrian government and emphasized the importance of solidarity and a unified stance against the injustice and oppression faced in that part of Kurdistan. His remarks aimed to instill a sense of national and patriotic awareness among the students attending the seminar.
In the first part of the seminar, Rebwar Mohammed focused on the pros and cons of mobile phone usage. He noted that while mobile phones are important tools for communication and learning—and can even serve as mobile libraries—long-term usage can lead to social isolation, sleep disturbances, and vision impairment. He stressed that students should organize their time and use mobile phones primarily to develop their skills and knowledge, rather than as a means of wasting time.
He then addressed the harms of excessive engagement with electronic games, explaining how these games can cause anxiety, social isolation, and sometimes violent behavior. He also warned that excessive gaming negatively affects academic performance, leads to physical inactivity, and reduces participation in sports activities. Additionally, he urged the students to maintain a healthy balance and not allow electronic games to dominate their daily lives.
At the end of the visit, the principal and staff of Leyla Zana Basic School for Girls expressed their gratitude to the students and the Media Department of Cihan University–Erbil for this scientific initiative, emphasizing their hope for the continuation of such awareness programs to further benefit the students.
