Media Department Students Visit Metro Center in Sulaymaniyah
Third-year students from the Media Department at Cihan University–Erbil conducted a visit to the Metro Center in Sulaymaniyah on Saturday, October 11, 2025, focusing on the defense of journalists’ rights. The visit was supervised by Assistant Lecturer Ahmed Jamal Hamakareem.
The delegation, which included the supervising lecturer and the students, was received by Mr. Rahman Gharib, Coordinator of the Metro Center, and Mr. Diyari Mohammed, Director of the Metro Center, where a productive meeting was held. At the outset, Assistant Lecturer Ahmed Jamal expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Metro Center for their warm reception and highlighted the pivotal role the center plays in defending journalists’ rights and addressing the issues, challenges, and violations faced by media professionals in the Kurdistan Region. He also elaborated on the vision and mission of the Media Department at Cihan University–Erbil, which aims to cultivate competent and professional journalists.
Mr. Rahman Gharib then presented an overview of the center’s most significant activities and initiatives aimed at ensuring freedom of journalistic work in the Kurdistan Region. He also highlighted their public relations efforts in advocating for journalists and addressing the cases they encounter. In this context, he emphasized the importance of coordination and cooperation between the Metro Center and universities to provide educational and awareness-raising activities for Media Department students, expressing his hope that Media Departments at universities would play an active role in organizing media affairs in the Kurdistan Region.
Mr. Diyari Mohammed discussed the latest developments regarding press freedom, highlighting the challenges journalists face in performing their duties, as well as the obstacles the Metro Center encounters in advocating for journalists and media institutions.
During the visit, the Media Department students actively participated in the discussion, directing numerous observations, questions, and suggestions to the officials of the Metro Center. In response, Mr. Rahman Gharib, after addressing the students’ questions, expressed his appreciation for the presence of such capable and conscientious students from Cihan University–Erbil, affirming their potential to become professional journalists and make meaningful contributions to this vital field.
Finally, on behalf of the head of the Media Department, Assistant Lecturer Ahmed Jamal expressed sincere appreciation for this important meeting. Both parties agreed to organize joint activities at Cihan University–Erbil for the benefit of Media Department students in the coming period.
