As part of their academic trip to Sulaimaniyah city, a group of third-year students from the Media Department at Cihan University-Erbil visited Payam Satellite Channel on Saturday, October 11, 2025, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Mr. Ahmed Jamal Hamakareem.
Upon arrival, the students were warmly received by Mr. Abbas Mohammed Ali, Director of Payam Satellite Channel, and Mr. Paywand Omar, a member of the Komal Media Network. In his address, the Director highlighted the historical establishment of the channel and its role in raising societal awareness and educating families. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and media organizations, particularly in coordinating efforts between university media departments and media establishments to enhance the media mission shared by both parties.
Mr. Paywand Omar then underscored the significance of the students’ visit, discussing the growing role of new media and the decreasing influence of traditional media in the current era. He also highlighted the challenges posed by the overwhelming volume of content on social media and stressed that universities have a responsibility to address these issues by producing ethical and professional journalists and media practitioners.
Following the speeches, the Director of Payam Channel guided the students on a tour of the station’s various departments. During the tour, students gained first-hand insight into the operations of different sections, including news studios, program studios, the newsroom, control and broadcasting rooms, and other departments within the television station.
In conclusion, the supervising lecturer noted that Cihan University-Erbil is the only university in Iraq with its own television and radio stations. He explained that Media Department students benefit from these facilities throughout their studies, gaining practical experience in real media environments. On behalf of the Head of the Media Department, he extended sincere thanks to the Director of Payam Satellite Channel and all staff members for their support and for providing detailed information about the channel’s operations. He also emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration between the university and media organizations to further benefit students and the media sector in the Kurdistan Region.
