Medical Microbiology Department Organizes Workshop on Antibiotic Resistance: The Silent Pandemic That Must Be Stopped
On 26 November 2025, the Department of Medical Microbiology at Cihan University–Erbil conducted a scientific workshop on campus as part of World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week. The event was held in the VIP hall with the participation of academic staff and students, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Ameena S. M. Juma, Head of the Department of Medical Microbiology.
The department formally welcomed the guest speaker, Dr. Warka Faraj Ahmad (MBChB, FIBMS Pathology/Immunology & Medical Microbiology, Rizgari Hospital-Erbil), who led an in-depth discussion on current trends and the growing global threat of antimicrobial resistance, highlighting the clinical challenges faced by healthcare systems and the importance of responsible antibiotic use.
Academic staff members of the Medical Microbiology Department presented a series of topics covering the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, patterns of misuse, infection-control strategies, and the role of antimicrobial stewardship in reducing the burden of resistant pathogens. The workshop provided comprehensive scientific insights that strengthened participants’ understanding of this silent but rapidly escalating public health threat.
The workshop concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which students and faculty discussed practical approaches to combating antimicrobial resistance. Attendees expressed positive feedback, emphasizing the value of the workshop in enhancing academic knowledge and supporting ongoing scientific development within the department.
