Nutrition and Dietetics Department Students Gained Practical Insights into Hospital Nutrition Management
On Thursday, January 23, 2025, students from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Cihan University-Erbil visited Sarwaran Hospital under the supervision of Lecturer Tanya Salam, Head of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department, to deepen their understanding of clinical nutrition and dietary management for hospitalized patients.
The students were warmly welcomed by Ms. Parstu Jalil, Director of Management. The visit focused on teaching students how nutritionists and dietitians integrate their expertise into hospital settings. A specialized physician provided a detailed session on the role of nutrition in patient care, highlighting how dietitians assess nutritional needs, develop meal plans, and collaborate with medical professionals to support patient recovery. One of the key learning aspects highlighted was preparing specialized diets for patients with specific medical conditions, such as diabetes, renal diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, and post-surgical recovery cases.
During the visit, students observed how hospital dietary teams formulate nutritionally balanced meals, ensuring that each patient receives the appropriate caloric and nutrient intake according to their condition. Additionally, they learned about the standard meal preparation and distribution procedures, including food safety measures, portion control, and personalized dietary modifications based on patients’ medical needs. The importance of nutritional assessment tools and monitoring patients’ responses to dietary interventions was also discussed, giving students insights into the clinical decision-making process in hospital nutrition management.
This visit provided students with valuable practical knowledge, reinforcing their ability to apply nutritional science in real healthcare settings. Through direct interaction with hospital professionals, they also gained an in-depth understanding of how medical nutrition therapy supports patient health and recovery. The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics continues to emphasize the importance of hands-on learning experiences, equipping students with the necessary skills to excel in clinical nutrition and dietetic practices.
