Students from the Department of Community Health Nursing Deliver First Aid Awareness Program at Honas High School – Khabat
On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, fourth-year students from the Department of Community Health Nursing at Cihan University–Erbil carried out a community outreach visit to Honas High School – Khabat as part of their field training activities. The program was designed to strengthen first aid awareness and promote lifesaving knowledge among high school students.
The delegation was received by the school principal, Mr. Salah Khalid, who welcomed the initiative and expressed his support before the session began. The educational workshop was presented by Wissam Khabat, Salih Ahmed, and Avin Niro, combining scientific explanation with practical training.
Throughout the session, the presenters highlighted the significance of immediate response during emergencies, particularly stressing the importance of the “Golden Hour.” They explained that early and correct intervention can dramatically reduce fatalities and long-term complications. The team emphasized that first aid should be viewed not only as a medical skill but also as a social responsibility that enhances community safety.
As part of the practical training, students demonstrated essential emergency procedures using appropriate instructional equipment. They provided step-by-step guidance on performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including effective chest compressions and rescue breathing techniques to preserve brain function until medical professionals arrive. The workshop also included a demonstration of the Heimlich maneuver to manage choking incidents, especially among children and adolescents.
Additionally, the speakers addressed widespread misconceptions regarding burn care. They clarified that applying substances such as toothpaste or butter can worsen injuries and instead recommended scientifically approved measures, including cooling burns with lukewarm running water, keeping the area clean, and applying direct pressure to manage heavy bleeding when necessary.
The training concluded with guidance on handling bites and stings. Participants were advised to avoid unsafe practices such as cutting or attempting to suck the wound. Instead, emphasis was placed on immobilizing the affected limb and seeking immediate medical attention.
At the end of the visit, Mr. Salah Khalid conveyed his appreciation to the students and faculty of Cihan University–Erbil for their commitment to community service. He praised the clarity and relevance of the information delivered and expressed interest in maintaining ongoing cooperation between the university and the school.
