Students from the Department of Medical Microbiology Distribute Ramadan Calendars and Conduct a Food Safety Awareness Activity at Erbil Street Bazaar
On Thursday, March 5, 2026, a first-year student from the Medical Microbiology Department at Cihan University – Erbil, Soz Sarchel Shafiq conducted a community awareness activity at Erbil Street Bazaar.
The activity involved designing and distributing a Ramadan calendar to members of the public, accompanied by direct guidance on food safety practices and methods for preventing food poisoning during the holy month of Ramadan.
During the activity, (Soz Sarchel Shafiq) distributed the calendars to visitors and shopkeepers in the bazaar and explained key food safety measures related to the preparation and storage of meals during fasting periods. The guidance focused on maintaining proper hygiene during food preparation, preventing cross-contamination between raw and cooked foods, and ensuring proper storage temperatures to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses caused by microorganisms such as Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli.
Furthermore, the student interacted directly with community members by answering questions related to safe food handling and recognizing the early signs of spoiled food that may lead to food poisoning. The activity emphasized practical daily practices that families can follow to maintain food safety during the increased meal preparation associated with Ramadan.
The initiative concluded with positive engagement from the public, who received the Ramadan calendars and expressed appreciation for the health information provided during the awareness activity.
