The 5th International Conference on Architecture and Civil Engineering Sciences Hosts a Session on Exploring Innovations in Environmentally Sustainable Buildings
On Thursday, February 27, 2025, the track on Exploring Innovations in Environmentally Sustainable Buildings continued its insightful discussions on the second day of the 5th International Conference on Architecture and Civil Engineering Sciences. The session focused on innovative research and practical applications for sustainable architectural development.
The session was chaired by Dr. Kazem Fares Damad Al-Issawi and Dr. Nagham Ismail Yahya, who led a series of engaging discussions on the latest strategies for integrating sustainability into architectural design. The first presentation was delivered by Dr. Sarah Abdulkareem Salih, who introduced her study titled Nearby Pocket Settings for Social Learning on Tropical University Campuses. Her research explored how well-designed outdoor spaces on university campuses can foster social learning and environmental awareness, ultimately contributing to sustainability in higher education institutions.
Dr. Nagham Ismail Yahya followed with her presentation on Beyond Efficiency: An Upgraded Sustainable Housing Model for the Middle East a case study of Erbil. Her study examined the challenges of housing sustainability in the region and proposed an upgraded model tailored to the environmental and climatic conditions of the Middle East. The research emphasized the importance of integrating energy-efficient design with cultural and social factors.
A critical assessment of urban sustainability followed, as Raed Fawzi Mohammed Ameen presented his research on The Effectiveness of Employing Reliable Well-Known Tools for the Sustainability Assessment of Urban Design in Iraq. His study evaluated established sustainability assessment tools and their applicability in urban planning and design, aiming to enhance environmental performance in Iraqi cities.
The theme of heritage conservation was explored by Dr. Suhaib Abbas Ali and Dr. Kadhim Faris Dhumad, who presented their research on Sustainable Rehabilitation Strategy for Heritage Khans a case study of the Heritage Khan of Alexandria in Iraq. Their study highlighted the importance of preserving historical marketplaces while incorporating modern sustainability practices, ensuring that heritage sites remain functional and environmentally responsible.
The final presentation of the session was delivered by Asst. Prof. Dr. Mazin Jaber Omer, who analyzed Sustainable Development and Residential Urban Land Performance: An Analysis of Modern Quarters in Mosul. His study focused on evaluating the sustainability and efficiency of contemporary urban developments in Mosul, identifying key factors that influence land use and residential performance in the context of sustainable urban planning.
The session ended with a general discussion, where participants engaged in thought-provoking conversations about the integration of sustainability principles in both modern and heritage architectural projects.
