The Department of Medical Laboratory Analysis Organized a Scientific Visit to the Swedish Hospital
On Thursday, January 30, 2025, the Department of Medical Laboratory Analysis at Cihan University-Erbil organized a scientific visit for fourth-year students to the Swedish Hospital under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Sally Khalil Baqer.
Upon arrival, the students and Assistant Lecturer Sally Khalil Baqer were warmly welcomed by Mr. Chalak Salam, the laboratory manager.
The visit began with a practical lecture in the hospital’s lecture hall, where Assistant Lecturer Sally Khalil Baqer explained a crucial diagnostic test called Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA). CEA is a protein produced during pregnancy to support cell proliferation and division, but its production ceases after birth. In some cases, cancerous tumors in the colon, breast, or ovaries may trigger the production of this protein. The CEA test is often used to assess a patient’s response to treatment. However, elevated CEA levels can also occur due to factors such as long-term smoking or severe inflammation. Therefore, the test is used in conjunction with other diagnostic tools and medical assessments for accurate results.
Following the lecture, the students visited the hospital laboratory, where Mr. Chalak Salam provided a comprehensive overview of the laboratory equipment. He highlighted the E411 device, which performs the CEA test and plays a significant role in cancer diagnostics.
The visit was designed to enrich the students’ learning experience by moving beyond the traditional classroom setting. This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to adopting modern teaching methods that enhance student engagement and understanding of practical scientific concepts.
At the end of the visit, Assistant Lecturer Sally Khalil Baqer expressed gratitude to Mr. Galak and the hospital administration for their time and cooperation.
