Translation Department Students Carry Out a Comparative Analysis of Dictionaries at Ashti Library
A group of second-stage students from the Department of Translation conducted a comparative analysis of dictionaries at Ashti Library in Erbil on February 11, 2026. The activity was organized as part of their Morphology course under the supervision of their course lecturer, A.L. Zeena Mahmood, to raise students’ awareness of the crucial role dictionaries play in the field of translation. It emphasized the importance for Translation Department students to remain attentive to new editions of dictionaries, as updated lexical and morphological information is essential for accurate and effective translation.
The activity began with the students being introduced to the latest editions of dictionaries, along with a wide range of other dictionaries available at the library, including English–English, Kurdish–English, and Arabic–English dictionaries. This introduction was supported by the librarian. The students then examined the newly arrived editions and conducted a comparative analysis with earlier and different types of dictionaries. This activity enabled them to compare and contrast dictionary structures, entries, and linguistic features relevant to their field of study.
The students were pleased to participate in the activity, as it allowed them to connect and apply what they had learned in class in a practical setting. Moreover, the experience helped them recognize how academic knowledge extends beyond the classroom into real-world professional contexts.
