Cihan University – Erbil is advancing towards prominence in the Webometrics rankings at the international, Iraqi, and Kurdistan Regional levels
According to the latest Webometrics ranking, Cihan University – Erbil has made significant strides globally, within Iraq, and in the Kurdistan Region, achieving a record within six years. The first edition of the Webometrics Ranking 2024, released in July, highlights Cihan University – Erbil’s substantial academic progress among public and private universities in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and globally. Within one year, the university advanced 364 positions worldwide. The progress of Cihan University-Erbil is outlined as follows:
On the Global Level
Cihan University – Erbil has achieved a remarkable record over the past six years (2019-2024) by advancing 10,604 positions in the Webometrics rankings. In 2019, the university’s ranking was (14,572), and it improved to (13,095) in 2020. By 2021, the university had climbed to 9,100, further advancing to 4,730 in 2022. In 2023, Cihan University-Erbil reached 4,332, and in the most recent 2024 ranking, it attained the position of 3,968.
On the Iraqi Level
According to the same Webometrics ranking, Cihan University – Erbil has shown significant progress among Iraqi universities. Out of 126 Iraqi universities, Cihan University- Erbil ranked 42nd in 2019, 41st in 2020, and 40th in 2021. It then rose to 33rd in 2022 and 31st in 2023, achieving 27th position in the most recent ranking. Thus, over six years, Cihan University – Erbil has surpassed 15 other Iraqi universities.
On the Kurdistan Regional Level (Public and Private Universities)
Cihan University-Erbil has made notable advances at the international and national levels. Among 33 public and private universities in the Kurdistan Region, the university’s rank was 14th in 2019 and ascended to 7th in the most recent 2024 Webometrics ranking.

The achievements and progress of Cihan University – Erbil in the Webometrics ranking among private universities in the Kurdistan Region over the past six years are significant. In 2019, the university ranked 5th among private universities, and in the latest 2024 Webometrics ranking, it attained 2nd place out of 17 private universities.
