Cihan University-Erbil Medical Laboratory Analysis Students Visit Al-Wafa Medical Complex
On Thursday, November 28, 2024, fourth-year students from the Department of Medical Laboratory Analysis at Cihan University-Erbil, under the supervision of Assistant Lecturer Sally Khalil Baqer, visited Dr. Hanan Jawad Kazim, a specialist in gynecology, infertility, and IVF with a subspecialty in genetic engineering, at the Al-Wafa Medical Complex in Erbil.
During the visit, Dr. Hanan provided a detailed explanation of sperm DNA genetic engineering, discussing the causes of genetic defects, their implications, and potential treatments. She addressed complex cases of delayed childbearing that can lead to infertility and their connection to sperm DNA.
The students engaged in a practical application, examining sperm samples under a microscope. They received training for two hours on a test called the fragmentation test, which measures the percentage of genetic defects in individual sperm samples. This test is crucial for determining male infertility and assessing whether the condition can be treated. Dr. Hanan also explained IVF methods, including sperm collection through surgical procedures for cases of severe infertility, as well as the fertilization of eggs and the freezing of embryos. She emphasized the importance of raising awareness in the community, noting that delayed childbearing in men is not a defect and that many such cases can be addressed.
The visit concluded with an engaging discussion between the students and Dr. Hanan, who encouraged them to ask important questions. She answered all inquiries clearly and scientifically, underscoring the significance of early detection of related health issues at the onset of marriage to prevent future complications. Dr. Hanan also highlighted the need for cultural and intellectual awareness within the community.
